Nothing symbolises the re-emergence of capitalism’s general crisis more clearly than president-elect Donald Trump’s refusal to rule out the use of force to retake the Panama Canal, to annex Greenland from fellow NATO member Denmark, and his willingness to use ‘economic force’ to make Canada the USA’s 51st state, Alex Gordon told the Communist Party’s Executive Committee this weekend.
Trump’s threats reflect the collapse of the ‘New World Order’ proclaimed by every US president since George Bush Snr. celebrated the end of the Soviet Union in 1991, he said.
All leading capitalist economies are gripped by capitalism’s third great depression, which began with the financial crash in 2008, Mr Gordon reported.
‘Instead of capital investment driving economic growth, stock market values are being hugely inflated by credit and speculation to produce what Marx called ‘fictitious capital’, which massively outstrips the real value being created by human labour power in the productive economy’.
The Communist Party Executive Committee welcomed the British government’s efforts to improve economic relations with China, whose continuing high levels of growth are based on manufacturing and construction, enhanced by research and technology.
But it warned of the dangers of war as the main capitalist powers intensify their global struggle over the world’s natural resources and trade routes, which explains Trump’s ambition to seize control of Greenland and the Panama Canal.
‘As Britain multiplies its atomic arsenal of submarines and warheads, and US nuclear bombers return to US bases here, the Labour government denies fuel support for millions of pensioners, cuts green investment plans, denies child benefits to larger families and refuses compensation to women robbed of their pension rights’, Britain’s Communists declared.
The Communist Party Executive Committee approved plans to hold webinars on January on ‘China today – socialism in action’ (January 22) and Holocaust Memorial Day (January 27).
The Party’s national Winter Campaign continues this January and February, with Party comrades, Branches, Districts and Nations throwing themselves into the struggle to build the Party and the broad movement across Britain.
The Executive Committee also discussed plans for the Party’s forthcoming 58th All-Britain Congress later this year.
