Britain’s Communist Party has condemned the latest threats against Cuba and challenged the British government to uphold international law.
At a meeting of the Party’s Political Committee on Sunday (11 January), General Secretary Robert Griffiths was responding to President Trump’s announcement that the 64-year long economic embargo embargo on Cuba would now include all exports of Venezuela oil to the Caribbean island.
US forces have also hijacked Venezuelan and Russian-flagged oil tankers on the high seas that might have been bound for Cuba.
Reports from the White House indicate that US secretary of state Marco Rubio would be appointed as some kind of “governor-general” in a post-revolutionary Cuba.
“Trump and his war-mongering criminal cohorts in Washington DC intend to overthrow the Cuban Revolution and restore a puppet dictatorship in Havana, complete with the casinos, brothels and Mafia-type gangs shut down under President Fidel Castro”, Mr Griffiths declared.
“Once again, Cuba would be a playground for the American super-rich as the country’s mass education and healthcare systems are dismantled”, he predicted.
The Political Committee noted the stunning achievements of the Cuban Revolution in terms of education, health, equality and internationalism – to name a few – even under the excruciating pressure of the USA’s decades long illegal blockade.
The Communist Party called for maximum international solidarity with the Cuban and Venezuelan peoples and the Cuban and Bolivarian Revolutions at this difficult time to resist US imperialism.
It also attacked the refusal of “a British government headed by shameless hypocrites” to utter a word of criticism of the President Trump’s “flagrant breaches” of the UN Charter and international law.
