“The first Cold War delivered half a century of lies about NATO, the US-led ‘arms race’, the non-existent ‘Soviet threat’ and US military bases in Britain – the new Cold War will be similar, but with deeper cuts to public services and social security programmes”, Carol Stavris told the Communist Party’s Political Committee on Tuesday evening (11 March 2025).
She warned that US President Trump’s agenda to seize control of precious natural resources and strategic transport routes in Ukraine, Greenland and Panama was driven by his undeclared war against the rise of China and its BRICS allies – which now include Middle East and African states alongside Russia, Brazil, India and South Africa.
According to the IMF, the BRICS+ group will account for 37% of global GDP by 2027, compared with the G7 top capitalist economies’ share of 28%. Trump has threatened BRICS members with US import tariffs of 100% should they try to replace the “mighty US dollar” as the world’s main reserve and trading currency.
Ms Stavris challenged claims that British rearmament would massively boost employment, arguing that investment in education, mental and physical healthcare, economic infrastructure and green energy would create many more jobs.
“Already, Keir Starmer’s decision to carry out Trump’s instructions has hit our pensioners and poorest families hard, with attacks on the disabled and higher energy bills to follow, as up to 7,000 jobs are cut in NHS England and local councils face a two-year £6bn funding gap”, Ms Stavris pointed out. Slashing overseas aid in half would remove schooling, medical protection, nutrition and clean water from millions of vulnerable people around the world, she highlighted.
Noting Elon Musk’s restoration of Andrew Tate’s account on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), Ms Stavris condemned the “weaponisation of social media” by misogynists as “a disaster for women”.
The CP Women’s Organiser agreed with Britain’s police chiefs that violence against women and girls is a “national emergency”.
“The radicalisation of young and men and boys to accept such violence as acceptable and even justifiable is a ticking time-bomb, yet the government and policing and legal systems are failing to protect us”, Carol Stavris accused.
The CP Political Committee urged members and friends to attend this Sunday’s events to mark the death of Karl Marx, with graveside orations from Cuban Ambassador Ismara Vargas Walter and CP India (Marxist) Politburo Member Dr Ashok Dhawale at 1.30 pm (assembling at Highgate Cemetery’s main entrance from 1 pm).
